John Petersen submits: In September I received an e-mail from France Innovation Scientifique & Transfert SA advertising their new IP Overview of Lithium Metal Phosphate Batteries - 2010/04. While I don't usually pay attention to e-mail pitches for costly reports, the FIST solicitation caught my eye because the abstract explained that roughly 1,100 patent applications have been filed for lithium metal phosphate chemistry since Dr. Goodenough's key patent issued in 1996. It's enough to give a guy a whole new perspective on this T-shirt from EV World. 10.8.10 SS T-shirt.png It also raises a couple of critical issues that many battery investors don't understand. There are only a few ways to make a lithium-ion battery and the basic manufacturing technology has been in the public domain for decades. That means manufacturers who trumpet their gee-whiz technologies are invariably talking about their particular recipes for the standard chemical coatings they put on the standard aluminum and copper foils that are used as current collectors in all lithium-ion batteries. So, while there are differences between the LiFePO4 batteries made by A123 Systems (AONE), Valence Technologies (VLNC), BYD (BYDDY.PK) and others, the differences are kissing cousins of the secret sauce recipes flogged by competing burger joints. This cartoon from Hugh McLeod says it better than I ever could.Complete Story »

    • Is Lithium-ion a Dead-End Electric Drive Technology?

John Petersen submits:Last week Energy Secretary Steven Chu addressed the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun. After watching the video presentation several times, I can't help but wonder whether the Secretary didn't politely caution his audience that lithium-ion batteries are a dead-end electric drive technology.

    • Micro-Hybrids And The Multi-Billion Dollar Battery Battle

By John Petersen:Last week, the stock of A123 Systems (AONE) soared 52% in a day after it announced that an enhanced chemistry would improve the cold and hot weather performance of its LiFePO4 batteries, reduce the need for ancillary temperature control systems and make them more competiti

    • Anti-Hype In Lithium-Ion Batteries Foretells Doom For Electric Cars

By John Petersen:Despite billions of dollars in private investments and public subsidies, lithium-ion battery technology has progressed at a snail's pace for years and battery developers have recently started to emphasize the importance of baby steps. For the first time in memory, anti-hype is becoming a dominant theme in stories about lithium-ion batteries. Examples from this month include:

    • A123 Is Proof Some Companies Go Public Too Soon

By Dana Blankenhorn: Venture capitalists know that new technologies are risky. They know things can go wrong. They sort of expect it.Public investors don't understand this. We expect that if we're to put our hard-earned dollars and dimes into an investment, things will work out.

    • Global X Lithium ETF Surges as A123 Systems Ramps Up Battery Production

ETF Database submits: Monday was a solid start to the week for equity markets, as reaction to the new “Basel Rules” regarding capital requirement levels, which gave banks a generous amount of time to meet the new requirements, sent shares surging. While this news remained in the spotlight for much of the day, one small sector of the economy also produced a banner day for shareholders but for a completely different reason.

    • Goldman's Advanced Battery Report: A Contrarian View

John Petersen submits:On Wednesday a reader sent me a new Goldman Sachs research report on the advanced battery sector titled "Advanced Batteries: Light, but the tunnel is long; Buy ENS, HEV Neutral, AONE Neutral." If the essence of legal argument is "the plausible boldly asserted," then I'd suggest that the essence of sell-side analysis must be "the implausible accepted without question." While I agree with Goldman's conclusions that

    • Lithium-Ion Batteries and Electric Vehicles: Upgrading the Storm Watch to Storm Warning

John Petersen submits:Before moving to Switzerland in 1998 I lived and worked in Houston, Texas, a place that teaches you the importance of keeping an eye on long-term weather forecasts, particularly during hurricane season. Most of the time it turns out to be wasted effort because Mother Nature is fickle and highly unpredictable, but when it's important it's really important. The same logic holds for investments in energy storage and electric vehicle technologies.

    • Is Lithium-Ion A Borgia Battery?

By John Petersen:I've recently learned that lithium-ion batteries might be a triple threat - Borgia batteries - cherished by eco-royalty, poisonous in the extreme, and explosive enough to wreak havoc in a $25 million laboratory that was built to safely manage battery explosions. Is it a battery or a WMD?

    • Lithium-Ion Battery Maker A123 Continues Streak Of Bad News

By Greentech Media: A123 (AONE) is having a string of bad luck in 2012. In the face of recent genuinely positive design wins for the lithium-ion battery maker across its target markets of transportation and utility-scale storage, the firm is facing threatening self-induced -- as well as external -- issues.
