By Michael Filloon: The third quarter had some very good results by producers active in the Williston Basin. The main story is focused around Twin Valley Field, where Whiting (WLL) had an IP rate of 7000+ Boe/d. Kodiak (KOG) and Newfield (NFX) have also had very good results (or at least much better than expected). Continental (CLR) now believes the second bench of the Three Forks could be commercial throughout the Bakken, and it is possible the third and fourth bench could be viable in spots. To the west of Kodiak's Koala wells is Oasis (OAS). This acreage seems to have similar upside. Oasis could have the best overall acreage in the Bakken, when its size and the number of acres are taken into consideration. There was a time before Brigham (BEXP) was purchased, that Oasis was thought by some as a company with acreage as good, with its shortcomings blamed on operationalComplete Story »

    • Bakken Players And Today's Metric: Cash Margins On The Rise

By Steve Zachritz:Each month we update the Bakken Players piece for current events, repricing of the group versus cash flow estimates, and adding a few new graphs. In between we occasionally like to focus on sections of the larger piece. Last week we had brief comments on production growth per share and you can see that piece here. This week’s topic: unit costs and cash margins.

    • Bakken Update: Denbury Is Using Significant Volumes Of Water In Completions

By Michael Filloon: Denbury (DNR) has been working the Bakken/Three Forks quite hard over the past couple of years. Even though its main business is EOR, it is increasing production quickly through unconventional methods in North Dakota. Early last year, Denbury was using 15 stage laterals, and in my opinion were behind other operators with respect to completion design.

    • Bakken Update: Q4 Results Around Kodiak's Polar And Koala Prospects

By Michael Filloon: The article "Q4 Production Update For The Bakken," noted some concern about Kodiak's (KOG) most recent production numbers. Not only had wells come in under expectations, but there were also problems with completions.

    • Bakken Update: How Good Is Kodiak's New Acreage?

By Michael Filloon: The third quarter has been good to the oil companies operating in the Williston Basin. Initial worries of escalating costs seem to be manageable, with only Newfield (NFX) seeing well costs as high as $11 million.

    • Oasis Petroleum: A Pure Bakken/Three Forks Play

Michael Filloon submits: There are three companies I believe to truly be levered to the Bakken Shale. When I say this, I don't mean the number of acres, but more of a ratio. Continental Resources (CLR) (Continental Resources: Lots of Bakken Upside) has the largest overall acreage. Whiting Petroleum Corp.

    • Bakken Update: McKenzie And Williams Counties Are The Next Emerging Plays Part One

By Michael Filloon: The Williston Basin Bakken/Three Forks hydrocarbon system may be the best unconventional U.S. oil play. Needless to say it is the biggest thing to happen in North Dakota in recent memory. From a development standpoint, Mountrail County has been the focal point. Ross, Sanish and Parshall fields have all produced well and in turn have seen the largest amount of capital spent.

    • Brigham Is Levered to the Bakken Shale

Michael Filloon submits: New technology with respect to land drilling for oil and natural gas has made a huge impact on several states in the USA. The Bakken shale may be a site with vast potential. Current technology does not gauge with certainty how much oil is in this shale, but USGS estimated 4.3 million barrels of oil and 1.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
