from Dean Baker Ezra Klein’s WonkBlog has an interesting piece asking whether Greece is going to have the dubious honor of having the largest economic downturn in modern history. The piece quotes Uri Dadush, a former World Bank official, who predicts a decline of 25-30 percent, which would beat both Argentina’s 20 percent decline in [...]

    • Argentina Ruling: Bad Precedent for Debt Crises?

The United States and Argentina rarely find themselves on the same side of finance or trade disputes, but the governments of both countries agree that a recent court ruling could set a dangerous precedent for debt restructurings.

    • Greece And The Fatal Flaw In An IMF Rescue

By Peter Boone and Simon Johnson.  This is a long post, about 3,500 words. In 2003 the International Monetary Fund published yet another internal review with an impressively dull title “The IMF and Argentina, 1991-2001”.  But hidden in that text is explosive language and great clarity of thought – in essence, the IMF staff belatedly recognized that their decision to repeatedly bailout Argentina from the mid-1990s through 2002 was wrong:

    • Why Argentina will default in 2013

Some countries default on their performing debt because they no longer have the ability to pay it. Other countries default on their performing debt because they no longer have the willingness to pay it.

    • Greece: Default is no soft option

The head of the European Central Bank once again said today that a Greek default "would not happen". Every G20 official - in or outside the eurozone - will tell you the same thing: with markets as fragile as they are, it is unthinkable that a sovereign government would be allowed to default. Investors and experts are thinking about it all the same.
