Apple, Google Fight The Battle Of Image

    Tue, 02/21/2012 - 17:55 EDT - Seeking Alpha
    • AAPL
    • Dana Blankenhorn
    • GOOG

By Dana Blankenhorn: It may not matter to some companies whether consumers think they're good or evil, but in the world of technology, where consumers can switch sites with a click or change ecosystems for a few hundred dollars, it means a great deal. Apple (AAPL) has recently become extremely aggressive in manipulating its image. It is a highly proprietary, rigidly-controlled company, and journalists can deeply resent this control. Facing a skeptical media, Apple has chosen to respond with big actions:

    • Apple has become aggressive addressing both labor and environmental issues in China even though, as many of its fans at Seeking Alpha note, it is under no legal obligation to do so.
    • Apple is clearing away consumer suits and providing more information on upcoming software, something it was not known for in the past.
    • Apple is trying to out-green the competition with a 171-acre solar cell array and biogas-fueled

    • Why Google Is Outpacing Apple: A Strong Cloud Beats A Strong Device

By Dana Blankenhorn: I own shares in both Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL) and both have done well for me, so I don't necessarily have a dog in this fight. But over the last three months I have noticed the trend of GOOG outperforming AAPL, Google continuing to race toward new highs while Apple remains stubbornly under $700/share.

    • Global Solar Panel Trade Fight Expands to India

I've often noted how trade disputes have a habit of reproducing in other jurisdictions, and with the United States and China duking it out over trade in solar panels and other "green" technologies, it was only a matter of time before other countries got into the mix.   But even I'm a little surprised at just how fast India has gotten involved:

    • First Solar Finds A Survival Strategy

By Dana Blankenhorn: As I've said many times here, solar technology is currently very bad for sellers and very good for buyers. So long as you can't amortize the power a cell generates against its carrying cost and get a profit against grid energy, this will be the case. Solar companies will be struggling for buyers, finding motives for them to clear out their inventory at some price.

    • Apple Patent Fight To Become All-Offense

By Dana Blankenhorn: Most reporting on the Apple (AAPL) vs. Android (GOOG) patent war make it a two-way affair. Apple is suing Android OEMs, but they're suing back. That is about to end.

By Dana Blankenhorn: The new tech buzzword for the fall of 2011 is ecosystem. We're not talking about the Earth, but a self-sustaining system of hardware, software, services and transactions without which you're no longer a real tech player.

    • Solar Pioneer Applied Materials Gets Caught Up In Bearish Sentiment

By Dana Blankenhorn: A few months ago people were writing about a “solar halo” over stocks involved in solar energy, since costs were dropping, shipments were rising, and there seemed little opposition to equipment installations. Now the sector has devil's horns due to over-supply of this generation's panels, slowing sales due to high installation costs, and Chinese competition.
