Appeals in cricket spot-bet cases

TORONTO — The Supreme Court of Canada said Thursday it would not hear the appeals of three members of the Toronto 18 terrorist group who wanted lighter sentences for plotting truck bombings in downtown Toronto.

The International Cricket Council are investigating reports that Pakistan bowler Mohammad Aamer has continued playing despite his ban for spot-fixing, a spokesman said Wednesday.Aamer, 19, was hit with a five-year ban in February following allegations of involvement in a spot-fixing scandal during last summer's Test series between England and Pakistan.However reports in England have said Aamer has flouted the terms of his ban by playing for a junior club in Surrey."We have heard the reports and we are investigating," ICC spokesman James Fitzgerald said.

TORONTO — Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr plans to appeal his terrorism convictions and hopes to walk free if his efforts are successful. Khadr’s lawyer Dennis Edney said Saturday that the Toronto-born 26-year-old was “looking forward” to the appeal which is expected to be filed “very soon.” Khadr has been held in Ontario’s maximum security Millhaven Institution since his transfer to Canada last September from Guantanamo Bay, where he had been held for a decade.

A further Pakistan cricketer was involved in arranging a spot-fixing plot, according to the lawyer acting for a sports agent who has admitted corruption.

But a federal court upholds fraud and obstruction convictions.

Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz will stay in Britain to be interviewed by police over the alleged spot-fixing scandal, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt said on Thursday.Left-armer Riaz, aged 25, will be questioned on September 14."We have arranged for his interview as we will continue to cooperate and we want to get to the bottom of the matter," Butt told a press conference in Lahore.Three other players under investigation in Britain over the matter can return home as no charges had been brought against them, Butt said.

Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt has appealed against his provisional suspension from cricket over spot-fixing allegations, International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Wednesday.Butt, together with fast bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif, was banned from playing by the ICC after allegations made by Britain's News of the World they'd been involved in a plot to bowl deliberate no-balls during last month's Test against England at Lord's as part of a betting scam.The allegations have since become the subject of a Scotland Yard investigation.
