American Airlines May Cut Up to 14,000 Jobs

(NEW YORK) — American Airlines won bankruptcy court approval Wednesday to combine with US Airways and form the world’s biggest airline. “The merger is an excellent result. I don’t think anybody disputes that,” Judge Sean H. Lane said before issuing his decision. (MORE: The Battle for the Future of American Airlines) But the judge declined to sign off on a proposed $20 million severance package for Tom Horton, currently the CEO of American’s parent AMR Corp.

(Reuters) - The bankrupt parent of American Airlines has eliminated five senior jobs in a restructuring and said its lead labor strategist would step down. The cuts by AMR Corp , combined with the previously announced departure of other managers, represents a "20 percent reduction in the company's most senior leadership positions," AMR said in a statement on Tuesday. An AMR spokeswoman said eight or nine management jobs had been cut so far. AMR filed for bankruptcy in November, citing a need to slash uncompetitive costs. ...

LONDON – Despite Europe’s bumpy economy, the continent’s airlines are surprisingly healthy, with no-frills Ryanair handing Boeing its biggest order of the year while some of the long-ailing national carriers are returning to health.   The sector is generally very vulnerable to economic hiccups but even with Europe’s hard times dragging on, passenger numbers have stayed surprisingly strong, said Amir Sharif, an operations management professor at Brunel Business School in London.
