    Afghan election watchdog strips 19 of poll wins

    Afghanistan's election watchdog said Sunday that 19 winning candidates in the country's parliamentary election have been stripped of their victories after fraud allegations were upheld."All the votes of 19 candidates who were declared winners in the preliminary results... have been nullified by the ECC (Electoral Complaints Commission) due to massive fraud," spokesman Ahmad Zia Rafaat told a press conference in Kabul.The results of a further two losing candidates who stood to gain from the disqualifications were also struck out for the same reason, he added.

      A funding shortage and unrest in war-torn Afghanistan have forced authorities to postpone parliamentary polls due in May for four months, an election commission official said Sunday.The ballot was originally planned for May 22, as required by the Afghan constitution, but will be postponed until September 18, Fazil Ahmad Manawi, a senior commissioner told reporters in Kabul.The Independent Election Commission made the decision because of "lack of budget, security and uncertainty and logistical challenges," the official said.
