    Activists condemn Kuwait crackdown on opposition

    Gulf human rights activists and academics on Sunday condemned a Kuwaiti police crackdown earlier this month on a public gathering for the opposition."We express our regret and condemn the excessive use of force against citizens and MPs" which threatened Kuwait's status as "an advanced example" of democracy for the region, said a statement signed by 52 activists."As Gulf intellectuals, we regret the retreat in democratic reforms and human rights in the Gulf Cooperation Council states and many Arab countries," it said.

      The parliament of the wealthy Gulf state of Kuwait on Wednesday unanimously passed legislation to grant cash and free food to Kuwaiti citizens totalling over $5 billion to mark national occasions.The grants, made last week by Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, stipulate paying 1,000 dinars ($3,580) to each Kuwaiti citizen plus free distribution of essential food items for 14 months.The cash grant will be paid to 1.155 million Kuwaiti citizens on February 24 while distribution of food will start February 1 and last until March 31 next year.

      Iran's police warned on Sunday of a crackdown if opposition supporters stage protests this week when the Islamic republic marks the 30th anniversary of the US embassy's seizure by radical students."The police will act against any illegal gathering on the 13th of Aban," deputy police chief Ahmad Reza Radan told the Mehr news agency, referring to the November 4 anniversary.Several reformist websites are urging opposition supporters to gather on Wednesday and protest "peacefully" and not to resort to "violence even if they are attacked."
