By Joe Springer:The average American makes $33,000 a year. Without compounding savings over time, the average American has a slim chance of being able to pay for life, plus retirement. Interest rates being so low these days it is hard to find a "safe" investment with a return that even beats inflation. So the average American, not having the money for life and retirement, must take on risk to find return. And there's the rub. The very people that can afford to lose their money the least because they don't make it fast enough, must risk their money the most, and risk getting further behind. So this is for you, average American. A portfolio to make up the ground between you and retirement, to provide home-run potential with acceptable risk. We'll start our portfolio with $33,000 in honor of the average American and give our portfolio the following purpose: The purpose ofComplete Story »

    • Retirement Savings Allocation for 2010

I adjusted my future retirement account 401(k) allocations today. I do not have as favorable an opinion of investing in the stock market today as I did a year ago. I would likely have allocated 20% to a money market fund except my 401(k) actually has two options – 1 paying 0.0% and the other paying -.02%.

    • The New Retirement: Forget Being Rich, All We Want Is Peace of Mind

We may never tire of discussing lessons from the Great Recession, which hit two groups especially hard: Teens who saw parents lose a home or job, and boomers who saw their savings depleted at precisely the wrong moment in life. The kids’ scars are mostly emotional. Financially, they had little to lose; indeed they stand to benefit from the more frugal approach to living that the recession has inspired in many. It’s a different story for boomers who are newly retired or rapidly nearing that stage of life.

    • Retirement Income: Must Have Stability

By Doug Meeks:When it comes to budgeting an income stream, most people only consider all of the income they need for living their everyday lives. A small group of people live beneath their means, generating consistent savings. An even smaller group retire and keep saving while living beneath their means. So when I plan an account to provide income, I consider the stability of that income to be very important. I do this so that life can go on with little disruption in as many cases as possible.

    • Pensions, like life, aren't fair

MOST adults have come to accept that life is not fair. Even when we’ve upheld our end of the bargain, things don’t always work out as one might have expected. The resulting disappointment tends to be especially bitter when it comes to retirement. Yesterday, British public-sector workers went on strike in response to demands that they work longer and contribute more to their pensions. I am struck by how much the word "fair" is being used.
