    3 killed as protesters, police clash in Peru

    Anti-mining protesters stormed a government building in northern Peru on Tuesday, leaving three people dead and more than 20 wounded, the Interior Ministry reported.

      Fresh clashes erupted between Omani police and protesters on Monday, a day after police killed at least one as the turmoil rocking the Arab world reached the normally calm Gulf sultanate.Hundreds of demonstrators stormed a police station in the key industrial area of Sohar, northwest of the capital Muscat, and police responded by firing tear gas.There were no immediate reports of casualties in the clashes that broke out near Earth Roundabout, a key intersection on the main road to the capital, where deadly violence erupted on Sunday, an AFP correspondent reported.

      At least 15 people died and 60 others were wounded when armed men attacked and took control of a government building in northern Iraq Tuesday, Interior Ministry officials said.

      Over a week into "Occupy Taksim", the Turkish situation is nowhere near resolution. In fact, judging by the capital markets response to news that hundreds of police stormed Taksim Square this morning using tear gas to disperse protesters, where the Turkish lira declined overnight to the weakest level since December 2011, bond yields dropped 29 bps, Turkish CDS rose wider than Russia, and where even the central bank has warned it may start engaging in tightening operations, things are going to get much worse.

      At least five activists opposed to mining in southeastern Peru were killed when riot police fired tear gas and shot pellets to keep demonstrators from storming the city airport, a local doctor told AFP early Saturday.The violent protests come in the final weeks of the presidency of Alan Garcia, who hands power over to leftist president-elect Ollanta Humala on July 28. Garcia is leaving so many unsolved social problems that Humala recently pleaded with him to address the most pressing issues and "not give us a mine field."

      Three bombings just minutes apart in Baghdad killed at least 20 people and wounded dozens on Sunday, an interior ministry official said.Two near-simultaneous car bombs hit the upscale west Baghdad neighbourhood of Mansur, which is home to several foreign embassies, and a third massive explosion struck the Iranian embassy in the centre of the city shortly afterwards.In addition to the dead, 45 people were wounded, the interior ministry official said.

    • One dead as Iran protesters clash with police

      Iranian riot police fired tear gas and paintballs at protesters holding anti-government demonstrations in Tehran, websites and witnesses said, while an Iranian news agency reported that a gunshot killed a bystander.The report by the Fars news agency said a number of people were also wounded by the gunfire and blamed the outlawed former rebel group, the People's Mujahedeen of Iran (PMOI).
