11 Stocks to Trade the Week of February 22, 2010

Dr. Duru submits: Google (GOOG) has had a rough 2010. While the NASDAQ is up 1% for the year, GOOG is down 10%. Buyers have finally flocked to GOOG in the past week as the stock hit oversold levels, and the stock has perked up for the first time in 2010.

[1:50 pm ET] Two weeks ago, I remarked in this space: “I have a sense that big changes are in store for capital markets”. The following week, the S&P 500 index plunged -3.02%. But this week the S&P index soared +3.73% and all 30 stocks in the Dow Industrials index made gains on the week compared to only two the week before. Talk about a turnaround. The Dow 30’s biggest loser had a gain of +1.20% this week while the biggest gainer the week before was up just +0.77%.

Success can come at an early age. In doing so, stocks broke through a variety of technical resistance barriers, which is certainly a positive development. This does not necessarily signal the all clear for stocks, however, as some persisting challenges will require keeping a close watch for any sudden reversals in the coming days. What is the concept behind buying stocks on the 52 week low list?The 2003 working paper was titled, "Volume and Price Patterns Around a Stock's 52-Week Highs and Lows: Theory and Evidence." The evidence they found was as follows:

Forgive the sarcasm in the title but it is indeed the Dow's 3rd worst weekly performance of 2013. The major US equity indices end the week near their highs - apart from the Trannies - but all fail to get back into the green as Cypriot concern is weighing everywhere but stocks. VIX ends the week notably higher (and near the highs of the week) as protection was very much bid into the weekend. The USD slipped on the day but ends the week up 0.35% (led by EUR weakness just outweighing GBP and JPY strength).
